What will we sing about: Iceland Dance Company’s Wild Night Out
The Iceland Dance Company (IDC) presents What will we sing about, a reimagination of experimental dance and live vocals, from February to March of this year as part of their 2018-19 season.
From superstar goddess Böjrk to avant-garde punk rock band Sigur Rós, Icelandic artists always irradiate a though-provoking, futuristic, daring, and mesmerizing vision. Audiences are submerged back to emotions like the pros and cons of party monster culture. Pieter Ampe, who is the lead choreographer and one of the dancers of the piece, gives the gift of bringing the fun and sadness of karaoke night. Ampe’s love for exposing his naked body on stage, freestyle dancing, and partying hard is an intelligent and new approach to dance.
Along with eight of the most recognized dancers from the Iceland Dance Company, Ampe asks each to create their own choreography and plotline based on the main idea; partying till dawn. In a sense, Ampe´s approach to modern dance is highly organic and original. It feels as if imperfect poses, all types of bodies, and all colors can come together as one during fun times.
What will we sing about also has a perspective from sadness as it focuses on the harsh winters Iceland experiences and the consequences that come with introverting during these times. Moreover, the party and the gatherings are danced through questions of what is acceptable as “self-expression.” As a planned and staged highly common social performance, the piece nails to interrogate the perfection of musical theatre by choreographing the unexpected, the vulnerability of party culture, and the thought of everything good and bad in the world.
The Iceland Dance Company focuses on delivering a contemporary dance company which constructs a repertoire led by Europe’s finest choreographers like Ohad Naharin, Johan Inger, Jiri Kylian, Ed Wubbe, Alexander Ekman, Rui Horta, Martin Kilvady, Alan Lucien Øyen, Damien Jalet and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
